In memory of Rainer Barbi
In 1974 Rainer Barbi started designing and producing tobacco pipes. Thus he was regarded the "senior" of the German freehand pipe makers, although he really had the spirit of a young person. There is no doubt, Rainer was one of the very best pipe makers in the world, which is even more remarkable for someone who started out as an autodidact. Rainer Barbi can be proud of his work;
his products are amongst the most popular tobacco pipes worldwide.
We got to know Rainer Barbi in 2008 and since then he spend many hours in our company to share his know-how with us.
He designed some Hilson models for us which we proudly took in production and we will launch these on the international market in September 2011.

Unforgettable was the trip that we made with Rainer in June 2010 to buy briar wood. His incredible knowledge of the material and his involvement with the products and its sellers made an indelible impression on me. His contribution to our products regarding design, quality, colours and marketing were essential for the reconstruction of our brand Hilson.
He shared his colourful personality and passion for his work with everyone willing to listen. This was truly inspiring and made us believe in the possible revival of the tobacco pipe.
Rainer Barbi was also a realist. When he heard that he was seriously ill, he fought to get better but eventually accepted his faith and bore it with dignity.
Rainer Barbi passed away on May 23, 2011. He was only 62 years old and we will miss him dearly.
